The Deepest Questions

At the heart of our lives are the deepest questions of our existence. They are not political, they are personal and deep. In Psalm 15:1-5, we read the list that God gave as conditions for those who fellowship on His holy hill:

1. He who walks and lives uprightly
2. Works righteous and justice
3. Speaks and thinks truth in his heart
4. Does not slander with his tongue
5. Nor does evil to his friends
6. Nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor
7. In whose eyes a vile person is despised
8. Honors those who fear the Lord
9. Who swears to his own hurt
10. He does not change
11. Does not put out his money for interest
12. Will not take a bribe against the innocent

Not surprisingly, the "world" moves people away from serious commitments to more superficial convenient and selfish decision-making. What if we made decisions on higher ground? What if we in our hearts followed God and His revealed truth? This sounds like an exciting adventure. It also sounds sensible and wise.

Billy Graham, in his full page ad in the New York Times, mentions three issues as guides to our voting decisions. They are our national commitment to Israel, the right of life to the unborn and marriage defined as one man married to one woman. Below is the text from his ad:
"The legacy we leave behind for our children, grandchildren and this great nation is crucial. As I approach my 94th birthday, I realize this election could be my last. I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel.
"I urge you to vote for those who protect the sanctity of life and support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Vote for biblical values this November 6, and pray with me that America will remain one nation under God."
Our voting is not primarily political, it is personal. We desire God's work of grace in our hearts; therefore we must do what is right.
